Purpose of Digital Chest X-Ray
The test is mainly used to detect:
- Tuberculosis (active or old TB)
- Lung infections
- Pneumonia
- Pleural effusion (fluid around lungs)
- Lung fibrosis/scarring
- Enlarged heart (cardiomegaly)
- Chest abnormalities
- Certain lung tumors or masses
Types of Digital X-Ray Views
1. Chest PA View (Posteroanterior)
- Standard view for overseas medical fitness.
- Patient stands facing the detector.
- X-ray beam passes from back to front.
- Provides clear images of lungs and heart.
2. Chest Lateral View
- Side-view of the chest.
- Sometimes requested if abnormalities are found.
3. Additional Views (If Required)
- AP Chest View
- Oblique View
- Lordotic View
These are generally not routine for overseas screening.
Procedure
Before the X-Ray
- Remove jewelry, chains, watches, and metal objects.
- Remove clothing with metal buttons or zippers.
- Wear the hospital gown if provided.
- Inform the technician if pregnant or suspect pregnancy.
During the X-Ray
- Stand against the detector panel.
- Take a deep breath and hold it.
- Remain still for a few seconds.
- Image is captured digitally.
Time Required
- Positioning: 2–5 minutes
- Image acquisition: a few seconds
- Total process: usually less than 10 minutes
Normal Chest X-Ray Findings
A normal report may state:
- Lung fields clear
- No active infiltrates
- No pleural effusion
- Cardiac silhouette within normal limits
- No radiological evidence of active pulmonary disease
Abnormal Findings
Lung Conditions
- Active TB
- Old healed TB scar
- Pneumonia
- Lung fibrosis
- Lung nodules
Heart Conditions
- Enlarged heart
- Congestive cardiac changes
Pleural Conditions
- Pleural thickening
- Pleural effusion
Other Findings
- Rib abnormalities
- Chest wall deformities
- Mediastinal widening
Digital X-Ray Advantages
✓ Faster results
✓ Better image quality
✓ Lower radiation dose than many older film systems
✓ Images stored electronically
✓ Easy sharing and reporting
✓ Faster overseas medical processing
Radiation Safety
A standard chest X-ray exposes a person to a relatively low amount of radiation. Medical facilities follow radiation protection protocols to keep exposure as low as reasonably achievable.
Overseas Medical Fitness and Chest X-Ray
For countries such as:
- Saudi Arabia
- United Arab Emirates
- Qatar
- Kuwait
- Oman
- Bahrain
the chest X-ray is one of the most important tests because it is used to screen for pulmonary tuberculosis and other significant lung diseases before issuing medical fitness clearance.
Information Usually Printed on a Digital X-Ray Report
- Patient name
- Passport number
- Age and sex
- Examination date
- X-ray type (Chest PA View)
- Radiologist findings
- Impression/Conclusion
- Radiologist signature and seal
